Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Have you ever felt an unexplained pinch in your lower back and/or hip that becomes irritated when you move from the sitting-to-standing position? If so, then you may be experiencing sacroiliac joint pain. The sacroiliac (SI) joints are formed by the connection of the sacrum and the right and left iliac bones. The function of this joint is to transfer weight and forces due to movement of your upper body through the pelvis, to your legs and vice versa. When this joint becomes injured and/or moved out of place, Dr. Doug Forsstrom at Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC can fix the problem.

The primary role of the sacroiliac joint is to provide stability for the pelvis and to bear the upper load of the body. It acts as a shock-absorbing structure and does not have much motion, but it can cause pain once it’s moved out of its groove. While it is not clear how the pain is caused, it can develop because of too much movement or too little movement. If you feel inflammation in this area, the longer you wait to find relief, the longer it will take to correct the problem.

Tips for Proper Posture

Sit up straight! Don’t slouch! If your mother ever shouted these commands at you, they probably didn’t stick, but they should have. Posture refers to the body’s alignment and positioning with the respect to the ever-present force of gravity. Good posture not only affects your physical body, it provides a boost for your emotional and mental well-being. By positioning the body correctly while sitting and standing, there is even pressure on the spine, its muscles and ligaments, leaving you to feel more pain-free. To help you stand tall and maintain good posture, Dr. Doug Forsstrom thought to share the following tips with you.

  • Imagine that a string is attached to the top of your head and pulling you upwards. The idea is to keep your body in perfect alignment, maintaining the spine’s natural curvature, neck straight and shoulders parallel with the hips.

  • To stand correctly, you should always keep your shoulders back and relaxed while pulling in your abdomen and keeping your feet about hip distance apart.

  • Balance your weight evenly on both feet and try not to tilt your head forward, backward or sideways. Finally, you should always keep your legs straight, but your feet relaxed.

Backpack Misuse Can Lead to Spine Problems

While settling into the school year, kids and adults who carry heavy backpacks may not realize that the substantial weight distributed from heavy textbooks can provoke spinal complications and strain the back, neck, or shoulders. At Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC, Dr. Doug Forsstrom wants patients to learn how to carry their items in a practical way, distributing the heavy load across the strong back and shoulder muscles.

When walking through the hallways, it is important to consider some tips. Always use both shoulder straps and wear the backpack on the back rather than over one shoulder. Pack heaviest objects into the backpack first so they are carried lower and closest to the body. Fill compartments so that the load is evenly distributed throughout the backpack and items do not shift during movement. If a child complains of discomfort, reduce the weight in the backpack immediately consider applying a guideline backpack weight limit as a percent of the child's body weight. The American Physical Therapy Association suggests 15-20%; the American Chiropractic Association advises 5-10%.

If you or your child experiences any back pain or discomfort resulting from backpack use, call us to discuss your treatment options. Spinal Degeneration

We all age, unfortunately, and as we get older our spines start to degenerate. Spinal discs are soft, compressible discs that separate the vertebrae that make up the spine. The discs act as shock absorbers for the spine, allowing it to flex, bend, and twist. Spinal degenerative disease refers to any disease of the spinal column that results from the aging process and wear-and-tear that occurs to the bone and soft tissues of the spine. If you notice yourself losing a bit of inch in height, this may be the reason why. If suspect that’s the case, you should give Dr. Doug Forsstrom at Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC a call.

The term degenerative spine disease does not refer to any one condition of the spine. It is a general term that encompasses many types of disorders that can occur simultaneously in the same patient. Disc degeneration is actually a natural part of aging, and over time all people will exhibit changes in their discs consistent with a greater or lesser degree of degeneration. However, not all people will develop symptoms. However, if you’re wondering what the symptoms are, these include lower back pain that is generally made worse with sitting, some back pain intensified by bending and lifting, and a desire to change positions frequently to alleviate pain. Treatment for degenerative spine disease varies considerably depending on the specifics of each case.

Chiropractic Adjustment Goals

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as a chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, is a common therapeutic treatment for lower back pain. To complete the adjustment, Dr. Doug Forsstrom at Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC will apply manipulation to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. In addition to relieving your back pain over time, people have reported that chiropractic adjustments benefit headaches, ear infections, neck pain, joint pain, and arthritis.

At Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC, we pride ourselves on taking a natural, drugless approach to helping our patients reach their health goals. Essentially, the basic principle of chiropractic itself is that the body has the amazing ability to heal itself (under proper conditions). The objective of a chiropractic adjustment is to reduce the subluxation with the goals of increasing range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improving function.

Auto Injury Treatment

Being in a car accident is a very difficult situation on a number of levels. Your mentality is shaken, you worry about the financial aspect of the automobile damage and because of this, you forget about your own physical wellness. Chiropractic treatments are the right step toward restoring the body. This is why Dr. Doug Forsstrom at Forsstrom Chiropractic Center, PC prides himself on fast, outstanding results from all types of accidents and injuries to make you feel good as new.

It is critical that chiropractic care is sought immediately after an automobile accident since allowing the effects of whiplash to go untreated can induce long-term pain. Whiplash destabilizes the spine and causes blurred vision, neck pain, headaches and much more. The seriousness of the physical effects of an accident is not always known or felt immediately following. It can take days, weeks or even months for major symptoms to show up, which is why chiropractic care is essential to maintaining the health of a spine that has been through a trauma. Early care and treatment mean full healing and quicker recovery.

If you’ve recently been injured in an auto accident, please call us to discuss your treatment options.
